Irish Students Setting Concrete Research in Space

Four students at St Nessan’s Community College will send an experiment to the International Space Station. They entered their proposal to test the effect of microgravity on reinforced concrete into the “The Only Way Is Up” competition last year. Run by the Irish Centre for Composites Research at the University of Limerick, the contest offered transition year students across Ireland the chance to do real space science. A panel of scientists selected the winning entry in February. The Longford Leader reported that the students and their teachers travelled to Nasa’s Wallops Flight Facility to watch their experiment ride on an Orbital Sciences Antares rocket. Unfortunately, technical issues delayed the launch until later this summer.
