Antares: 2014's Star of Summer

The American Association of Variable Star Observers named Antares the Variable Star of the Season for mid-2014. The article, written by University of Toronto astronomer Dr. John Percy, reviews our current understanding of the red giant and describes the challenges that amateur and professional astronomers face when observing the star’s varying light. The AAVSO’s database holds over 70 years worth of visual and digital observations - most of them collected by amateurs - which gives professional astronomers a rich source of data for their research.

The Variable Star of the Season collection contains articles about the most popular observing targets with summaries of the latest research and observing tips.
